Although the gymnasium was indeed “the naked place”, the Greeks did not always choose to exercise without clothes. In fact, millennia before modern fashion re-invented this staple garment, Herodotus records that young men and women of the Hellenic world would work out in the “tau-shirt”. Named after the most ergonomic and practical of letters, this was the clever successor to the “delta-shirt” (for the bigger-boned player but with no arm-holes) – and “gamma-shirt” (just one arm-hole). Ralston College is delighted to recreate this iconic piece for the 21st-century athlete.
